Nipple Surgery

Many women dislike the appearance of their breasts if they have large-sized nipples and areolas. This also causes them to lose confidence when wearing certain clothing or in intimate situations. Nipple and areola reduction cosmetic surgery can help address such concerns.

Discuss your concerns with your surgeon during the initial consultation before making a final decision about your procedure. Envy Aesthetic Center, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez, provides nipple and areola reduction surgery to patients in El Paso, TX, and surrounding communities.

What causes enlarged areola or nipple?

In some women, large nipples or areola enlargement is a congenital defect. In a majority of cases however, this effect appears after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Normal-sized breasts that develop oversized nipples and areolae may look out of place and make you feel embarrassed about your breast appearance.

Aging is another factor that causes nipple or areola enlargement. With age, the skin around the nipple starts to grow loose and begins to stretch. This can cause the areolae and nipples to look larger than before.

Whatever the cause, a skilled cosmetic surgeon can help to reduce the size of enlarged nipples and areolae through surgery with minimal scarring.

Candidacy for Areola and Nipple Reduction Surgery

Women who are bothered by nipples that are overly long, droopy or enlarged are a good candidate for this surgery. Persons with large areolas after breastfeeding or from birth also benefit from this procedure. Nipple and areola reduction surgery can also help persons who have previously undergone breast surgery and want to improve the appearance of their breast.

Nipple and Areola Reduction – Surgical Procedure

Nipple and areola reduction surgery involves correcting the shape and size of the nipples and areolas to balance them with the breast size. The surgery is performed by a plastic surgeon on an outpatient basis generally under local anesthesia. If nipple and areola reduction procedure is combined with other breast augmentation procedures such as a breast reduction, breast enhancement or breast lift, the surgeon will use general anesthesia.

After the anesthesia is induced, the surgeon makes a small incision inside the nipple to shorten the nipple or to narrow its circumference. To enhance nipple appearance, some tissue may also be cut out from below the nipple.

To reduce areola size, the surgeon makes a ring shaped cut around the edge of the areola. They remove the skin present in between and then connect the outer and inner rings by using sutures. Suturing is done along the edge of the areola which is darker in color and this hides the tiny scar that is left behind after the operated area heals.

What is the recovery process?

Most persons recover quickly from an areola and nipple reduction plastic surgery. In just two to three days after the procedure, they can get back to their normal routine. Some women experience a little pain and swelling or bruising, but this is easily managed with over-the-counter mild pain relievers. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez receives patients from El Paso, TX, and nearby areas for nipple and areola reduction procedures.
