Liposuction
Do your curves no longer curve the way they once did? Aging, weight fluctuations, hormonal changes, childbirth, and more can all cause your body to hold weight a little differently; even with diet and exercise, stubborn pockets of fat can resist your best efforts.
If you’re still struggling to get rid of small areas of fat around your midsection, arms, neck, back, flanks, buttocks, or more, liposuction and the expert touch of Dr. Gonzalez can get you the desired results.
What Is
Liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that permanently removes fat cells from a variety of locations on the body, including the following:
- Abdomen
- Thighs
- Flanks
- Buttocks
- Arms
- Chin
- Back
- and more.
Liposuction is one of the most popular body contouring procedures, as it can be applied nearly anywhere on the body and is a permanent fat-removal solution. After liposuction, patients can see a slimmer, more contoured treatment area. For an even more contoured and sculpted result, Dr.G 4D Hi-Def Liposculpture is another body contouring procedure Dr. Gonzalez offers his patients.
Am I a Candidate for
Liposuction??
While liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the body, it is not meant to be a weight loss solution. This means that ideal candidates are close to their goal weight but still frustrated about excess pockets of fat throughout the body. Additionally, candidates for liposuction should:
- Have good skin elasticity
- Be close to their goal weight
- Have stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to exercise
- Want to contour and slim the body
- Have realistic expectations for results
- Are nonsmokers, or are willing to quit
If you’re considering liposuction and want to find out if you’re a good fit for the procedure, call Dr. G Plastic Surgery today at (915) 600-2639 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Gonzalez. He will walk you through the steps of the procedure, discuss possible results, and help you decide if liposuction is best for you.
How Is Liposuction Performed?
Dr. Gonzalez uses a liposuction technique called tumescent liposuction, which is regarded as a less invasive method of this procedure. Your tumescent liposuction procedure may be performed on an outpatient basis, under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. If a larger volume of fat is removed, patients will need an overnight hospital stay to monitor their initial recovery progress.
Tumescent liposuction differs from traditional liposuction in that the surgeon starts the procedure by injecting a tumescent liquid into the treatment area. This solution is made up of saline, adrenaline, and a local anesthetic, and it prepares the treatment area for a more streamlined fat removal by causing the fat cells to swell, which makes them easier to remove. This also reduces the risk of bleeding and trauma to the surrounding tissues, consequently reducing swelling and recovery time. Dr. Gonzalez also uses the power-assisted lipoplasty (PAL) system, which utilizes a specialized cannula with mechanized movement to assist him.
Dr. Gonzalez will begin your procedure by making marks around the treatment area which will designate where he will make small incisions. Once you are under anesthesia, he will make small incisions. After injecting the treatment area with the tumescent fluid, he will insert a small, thin tube called a cannula. He will then use the cannula to vacuum fat from the treatment area, using smooth motions to create a natural-looking contour.
Once he is satisfied with the amount of fat removed and the treatment area’s appearance, he will carefully close the incisions.
How Can I Prepare for Liposuction?
During your consultation with Dr. Gonzalez, he will discuss the risks and benefits of liposuction to help you determine if this procedure will get you the desired results. He may also examine your skin to check its elasticity, which is its ability to “snap back” into place.
Once you and Dr. Gonzalez decide the procedure is best for you, he may give you some instructions on how to prepare for your liposuction procedure. These instructions may include the following:
- To stop or pause certain medications that may affect your healing
- To quit smoking
- To get additional diagnostic testing or physical examinations
- To maintain your current weight
It’s also a good idea to set some things up prior to your procedure. For example, body contouring procedures such as liposuction can often make mobility difficult in the early stages of recovery, so preparing your home can make the adjustment easier. Plan to take some time off work, schedule childcare if needed, and do extra grocery shopping to prepare.

What Is Recovery From
Liposuction Like?
Recovery will vary from person to person, as differences in healing processes, treatment areas, amount of revision during the procedure, and combination procedures can affect the process. However, you can expect some of the following from liposuction recovery:
Immediately following your liposuction, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and possible discomfort. You will be given a compression garment, which reduces swelling and helps the skin retract around the treatment area. This will need to be worn day and night, as per Dr. Gonzalez’s instructions. You may also be given a surgical drain, which helps remove excess fluid.
You may be asked to restrict physical activity, including strenuous exercise, for a few weeks. However, it is important to do some light walking as soon as you feel up to it, as this helps increase blood circulation, improving healing and reducing the risk of blood clots. Most liposuction patients can return to work after a few days.
What Results Can I Expect After Liposuction?
Your liposuction results may be hard to see for a few days, as your treatment area will be swollen and bruised. As healing progresses (and bandages and compression garments are removed), you will begin to see the results of your procedure: a slimmed, contoured treatment area that looks natural and smooth.
