What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery that improves the size, shape, and overall fullness of the breasts. Many patients choose breast augmentation to:

  • Increase the size of naturally small breasts
  • Restore lost volume after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Correct asymmetrical breasts
  • Create a fuller contour

Since every patient’s anatomy and preferences are different, breast augmentation is customized based on factors like implant type, size, location, and placement.

Types of Breast Implants

Breast augmentation can be customized with different implant options based on your body type, aesthetic needs, and desired feel.

Saline Implants

Saline implants are made of a sterile saltwater solution. Some saline implants are pre-filled, while others may be inserted first and then filled during surgery. This allows Dr. Gonzales to make precise adjustments to improve symmetry.

Because of their liquid filling, they may feel firmer than silicone implants and are more likely to show rippling in patients with thinner breast tissue. However, this means saline implants are easier to replace if a leak occurs. In such cases, the implant deflates, and the saltwater solution is absorbed by the body.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are filled with a softer silicone gel designed to match the feel of natural breast tissue. Many patients choose silicone implants for their softer, more natural feel, especially for those who want to avoid an overly firm look.

However, an implant rupture in silicone implants may not be as noticeable. As a result, silicone implants often require follow-up care and check-ups.

During your consultation, Dr. Gonzalez can explain the benefits, limitations, and maintenance considerations of each implant option so you can choose the one that best fits your needs.

Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

You may be a candidate for breast augmentation if you:

  • Desire more fuller, firmer breasts
  • Want to restore volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or aging
  • Are in good overall health
  • Are a nonsmoker or are willing to quit
  • Have fully developed breasts
  • Are finished having children
  • Are realistic about your desired results

While being finished with pregnancy is not always a requirement, it may be recommended if you want to maintain your results as long as possible. This is because pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight changes can affect breast size, shape, and skin over time, which can affect or reverse your breast augmentation results. The best way to know whether breast augmentation is right for you is to schedule a consultation at Dr. G Plastic Surgery.

What to Expect During Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is generally performed on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia.

Dr. Gonzalez will make different incisions in one of three locations, based on your current body figure and breast shape:

Inframammary Fold

An inframammary incision is made along the inframammary fold, or the natural crease under the breast. This is one of the most common approaches to breast augmentation, as it allows Dr. Gonzalez direct access for implant placement while strategically placing the scar discreetly within the fold.

Periareolar

A periareolar incision is made along the bottom edge of the areola where the darker skin around the nipple meets the surrounding breast tissue, resembling a half-circle. This placement helps the incision and scar blend with the natural color transition of the nipple-areola complex.

Transaxillary

A transaxillary incision is made around the underarm, around the natural crease. This allows the implant to be placed without a direct incision on the breast tissue, leaving a “scarless” appearance. However, it may not be the correct approach for every surgical plan.

Breast Implant Placement

Dr. Gonzalez will also place your implants in one of two locations:

Subglandular Placement

The implant is placed under the breast tissue but above the chest muscle. This option is best for patients with sufficient natural breast tissue to provide adequate coverage. It may also provide a more noticeable upper-breast fullness, depending on implant size, profile, and natural breast shape.

Submuscular Placement

The implant is placed underneath the chest muscle. This may be recommended for patients with less natural breast tissue to cover the implant. This may result in softer upper-breast fullness and a more natural-looking feel. However, patients may experience a greater degree of tightness or soreness during recovery, which improves as the body heals.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Following surgery, Dr. Gonzalez will close the incisions and dress your wounds. Most patients experience very little pain after surgery, as a long-acting local anesthetic is administered as part of the procedure. However, it’s normal to still feel pressure, tightness, or soreness for the first few days. Bruising may last for about a week, and swelling for a few weeks.

During this time, it’s important to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for at least six weeks or until cleared by Dr. Gonzalez. Most patients return to work three to five days following surgery. Dr. Gonzalez will provide detailed postoperative instructions so you know how to care for your incisions, manage symptoms, and protect your results.

What Do Breast Augmentation Results Look Like?

During the early healing phase, your breasts may feel firm, sit higher on the chest, or look different than what you expected. However, as swelling improves and the surrounding tissues relax, your implants will settle into a more natural-looking position. Your final results can take up to six months to fully realize.

While they may be long-lasting, they should not be considered permanent and require examination to monitor breast health and implant integrity. Additionally, factors such as aging and weight changes may still affect your breasts. Many patients choose to undergo a breast lift or additional implant procedure to maintain their contour.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

  • How much is breast augmentation in El Paso, TX?

According to recent CareCredit studies, the average cost of breast augmentation in Texas is around $7,448. However, this typically only reflects the surgeon’s fee and does not include other influencing factors like location or recovery expenses. Dr. Gonzalez provides clear, detailed cost estimates during your initial consultation as well as flexible financing options for patients who need a timeline.

  • What affects the cost of breast augmentation?

Factors such as the type of implants used, placement, incision technique, anesthesia fees, surgical facility costs, and any additional follow-up care can influence your final pricing. It can also vary if breast augmentation is combined with another procedure, such as a breast lift.

  • How long does breast augmentation recovery usually take?

Most patients should expect several days of downtime, with swelling, tightness, and soreness during the first few days. However, symptoms gradually improve over the following weeks, with many patients returning to work and light daily activities within a week.

  • When can I return to work and exercise after breast augmentation?

While most patients return to work within three to five days, depending on their job type, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least six weeks or until Dr. Gonzales clears you. However, light arm movements or walking can help promote circulation.

  • Does breast augmentation pose any risks?

As with any surgery, breast augmentation may lead to varying degrees of bleeding, infection, changes in nipple sensation, implant rupture, scarring, and other complications. It’s important to keep up with frequent follow-up visits to analyze implant integrity and breast health.

  • How long do breast implants last?

It’s important to know that breast implants are not permanent. Many breast augmentation patients undergo replacement or removal due to ruptures or changes in preference. Dr. Gonzalez will explain what to expect long-term and how follow-up care can help monitor your implants over time.
