Will my insurance cover a tummy tuck? | El Paso TX Plastic SurgeryTummy tuck is a popular procedure for patients seeking to reduce excess skin after having children or losing substantial amounts of weight. Excess skin can cause irritation when wearing clothes, or even cause rashes or infections in between the folds of skin that can be quite painful. If you are considering using insurance coverage for your tummy tuck procedure, it is important to discuss this with your surgeon’s office when calling to schedule your consultation. Board certified plastics surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez provides tummy tuck to patients in El Paso, TX, and surrounding locations.

Procedure

Tummy tuck surgery is an outpatient procedure completed while a patient is under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon will make a horizontal incision along the abdomen and bikini line. The abdominal muscles are then tightened and repaired to create a flat, even skin surface. Afterward, the extra skin is trimmed away and the remaining skin is pulled taut and stitched together.

Insurance

Generally, insurance does not offer coverage for tummy tuck and consider them to be an optional, aesthetic operation. However, there may be exceptions when the insurance company will pay for some of the cost if it is medically necessary – such as when the excess abdominal skin causes you to have skin irritation and infections. If you undergo a tummy tuck procedure and the insurance company pays for the removal of the excess skin, you will still need to pay for the part of the operation that involves tightening the abdominal muscles. The removal of only excess skin is called a panniculectomy and is considered a different surgery. If you are interested in only having the skin removed, it is more likely your insurance will cover the procedure. It is important to note that if any abdominal muscles need repairing or tightening, the skin may not appear tight and flat with only a panniculectomy.

Discuss With Your Surgeon’s Patient Coordinator

It is important to talk to the surgeon’s office where your procedure will take place about your insurance coverage. Some surgical practices do not take any form of insurance. However, most practices offer budget-friendly finance plans. Once you have had your first consultation and physical examination, you will be supplied with a plan of the expenses associated with your procedure and be given information on ways to pay.
