Hand Surgery Treatments

Most tasks in your daily routine require you to use your hands. Even seemingly minor injuries to your hands can cause difficulty in performing the simplest activities, such as brushing teeth, opening doors, dressing, operating tools, and picking up things.

Hand surgery can help in restoring the appearance and function of your hands. It can also enable you to resume your normal lifestyle. During your initial consultation, your surgeon will examine the condition of your hand and recommend the appropriate treatment options.

Envy Aesthetic Center, led by board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez, provides hand surgery procedures to patients in El Paso, TX, and surrounding locations.

Suitable Candidates for Hand Reconstructive Surgery

Hand reconstructive surgery is usually recommended for patients that have the following conditions:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Rheumatoid arthritis-induced joint deformity
  • Trauma or injury to the hands in an accident
  • Firework-induced deep wounds in the hand
  • Fingertip injuries
  • Skin cancers on the back surface of hands
  • Congenital deformities such as syndactyly or polydactyly

Congenital Hand Defect Surgery

Thumb deformity, absence of bones in the hand, and uneven or unequal fingers are a few common forms of congenital deformities in the hand. The type of surgery performed for such deformities depends on the severity of the problem. These are a few types of congenital hand surgery performed by experienced surgeons:

Syndactyly Surgery

Syndactyly refers to a condition wherein two or more fingers get fused together giving the appearance of webbed fingers.

Polydactyly Surgery

Polydactyly refers to a condition in which an extra finger exists on the hand. Ulnar polydactyly expressly refers to the presence of an extra pinky finger.

Clubhand Surgery

Clubhand refers to a condition in which the ulna is shorter than usual or the radius is absent. In this condition, a problem exists in the muscles of the region.

Tendon Repair

This is a challenging surgery and may include primary, delayed primary, or secondary tendon repair.

Fasciotomy

This type of surgery is undertaken for treating compartment syndrome. This is a painful condition which develops when there is increased pressure or inflammation in the body. The surgeon will make an incision in the arm or hand. This is done for reducing the pressure for restoring blood circulation. The surgeon will also remove all damaged tissue from the site. Additional damage is prevented by the procedure.

Surgical Drainage

Infections are highly common following a hand surgery. The treatment for such infections may involve using rest, heat, elevation, antibiotics, and surgery. Surgical drainage may be required in case of an a sore or an abscess in the hand. This will be required for eliminating pus formation.

Your surgeon may carry out a debridement if the wound or the infection is severe. This is for cleaning dead and contaminated tissue from the wound. It is also for preventing further infection and enhancing healing.

In case of progressed infections, surgical drainage, and debridement may be performed by the surgeon. The same holds true in case of abscess. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Marco Gonzalez receives patients from El Paso, TX, and nearby areas for hand surgery.
